Think of underglaze as special “paint” for ceramic clay that does not make it waterproof or food-safe. If you plan to eat, drink, or pot a plant in your vessel, ask your nearest studio associate about kiln firing your vessel + applying various waterproofing/food-safe finishing glazes (which also add a rich, glossy shine to your piece). Not planning to utilize your decorative sculpture? You can choose to forgo glaze + enjoy the beautiful velvety matte appearance of the underglaze all by itself.

Underglaze stays put (rather than feathering or “bleeding” outside the lines), making it an ideal medium for all kinds of techniques. Adding intricate detailing. Apply a lovely wash of all-over color. Let your imagination run wild!
